Memorial Day activities in the county
The following events are taking place for Memorial Day in the area. All events take place Monday, May 27, unless otherwise noted.
ALGONQUIN – LAKE IN THE HILLS
MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY, 10:30 a.m, Riverfront Park, 201 N. Harrison St., Algonquin. Guest speakers include presidents, or their representatives, from Lake in the Hills and Algonquin. Guest speakers will be Madeline Rhoda from Algonquin and Carl Kristensen from Kristensen Realty in Algonquin. The POW/MIA flag will be placed over an empty chair by Tom Walsh, a World War II veteran, to honor those military members who never returned home. George Imhoff, a World War II Navy veteran, will place a wreath in the water. There will be a 21-gun salute followed by the playing of taps by Jacobs High School students to honor all the servicemen and women no longer with us. MEMORIAL DAY PARADE, 10:15 a.m., starting at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, First Street and Three Oaks Road, Cary. Parade will be followed by a ceremony at Cary Veterans' Park and conclude before noon. Information: Al Young, 847-639-7684.
MEMORIAL DAY VIGIL, May 25-27, Lake Julian, 65 S. Route 14, Cary. A 48-hour vigil where 320 American flags will be placed to represent the 320 soldiers who gave their lives during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. The vigil has been organized by the Veterans Network Committee of Northern Illinois. Information: 847-875-0159.
MEMORIAL DAY PARADE & CEMETERY SERVICE, 11 a.m. Crystal Lake American Legion Post 171 will conduct its annual parade starting at Crystal Lake Central High School, then east on Franklin Avenue, north on Williams Street, and west on Woodstock Street to Union Cemetery for a memorial service. In the event of inclement weather, the parade will be canceled and service will take place in the Field House at Crystal Lake Central High School. Information: 815-459-2020 or www.crystallake.org.
FOX RIVER GROVE
MEMORIAL DAY PARADE, 8:30 a.m., starting at Algonquin Road School, 975 Algonquin Road, Fox River Grove. Parade continues down Algonquin Road to South River Road straight to the baseball diamond along the Fox River in Lions Park for a program to honor our departed veterans. Hosted by the American Legion Frank H. Nagel Jr. Post 119. Information: 847-567-3459.
MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE, 9 a.m., Alden-Hebron High School Gym, 9604 Illinois St., Hebron. Pilgrimage to Hebron Cemetery after service, then to Linn-Hebron cemetery to close.
MEMORIAL DAY PARADE, 11 a.m., starting at the Village of Huntley Municipal Complex, 10987 Main St., and proceed west on Main Street to the Huntley Square Gazebo, for a brief ceremony to honor all veterans. MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS, 9 a.m., Chapel Hill Bridge for the river wreath ceremony. Flying aircraft are again part of these ceremonies. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. and proceed directly to the Johnsburg Community Club for a program at the Armed Forces Flag Memorial. A pig roast-style picnic and baseball game will follow. MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY, 10 a.m., Veterans Memorial Park, Pearl and Court streets, McHenry. Hosted by the Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 188, VFW Post 4600 and American Legion Post 491. Commander Cliff Schmidt from the Polish Legion of American Veterans is this year’s Master of Ceremonies. The Mayor of McHenry, the Honorable Susan Low, will also be a guest speaker, along with other post commanders from McHenry. There will be a march to Weber Park to place a wreath in the river to honor deceased veterans. A rifle salute will be performed and taps played. The group will march to St. Patrick's Parish and conduct a salute with a final salute conducted at Woodland Cemetery. After the ceremony, a light luncheon will be served at the Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 188, 1304 Park St., McHenry. Information: 815-385-9789.
MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE, 10:30 a.m., Curly Stevens Park, Main and Broadway streets. The Paul C. Hoffman American Legion Post 253 to host a ceremony. All veterans and non-veterans are welcome to attend. Information: 815-678-4040.
MEMORIAL DAY PARADE & CEREMONY, 9 a.m., there will be a short procession parade from the Spring Grove Fire Department to Horse Fair Park followed by a ceremony to honor our fallen soldiers. Information: 815-675-2121 or www.springgrovevillage.com.
MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY & PARADE, 10 a.m., in the park on the square, Woodstock. Ceremony will be immediately followed by the annual parade. Information: www.woodstockil.gov.
