Let the Christmas season officially begin as McHenry hosts a weekend of giving, tasting, caroling and trolley riding.
The Downtown McHenry Christmas Walk & Winter Taste-Fest takes place 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 16 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 17.
Complimentary trolley rides will take visitors downtown, where they can shop and explore all the businesses have to offer, said Suszan Worzala, an insurance agent with Letizia Financial Group and member of the Downtown McHenry Area Business Association, which hosts the event.
Trolley riders will hear a narrative of the history of McHenry and its downtown businesses, she said.
From 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 16, businesses will offer “A Bite Size Taste” of their cuisine, serving up $1 to $2 samples of various foods. About 20 restaurants are participating.
“My goal is to go to every single one of them, spend $20 and just eat all day long,” Worzala said. “It’s a way to experience all of McHenry’s restaurants.”
Nov. 16 also includes Pictures with Santa and Carolers in the Park from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., with the annual tree lighting at 5:30 p.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park.
On Nov. 17, the city will offer more holiday shopping, pony and horse-pulled wagon rides, karaoke, holiday characters and the Harms Farm Snowball Train Ride.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 17, visitors will be encouraged to pick an ornament from an assortment of 10 decorated Christmas trees at Green Street and Rotue 120. Each ornament represents a need of the FISH of McHenry Food Pantry.
“It’s a FISH Food Pantry extravaganza,” Worzala said.
Donations then can be dropped off at the McHenry Downtown Theater, 1204 N. Green St.
Once coinciding with the McHenry Toys for Tots Parade, the festival was moved to its own weekend this year, Worzala said.
The parade will take place Nov. 24, leaving the McHenry Harley-Davidson, 2103 Route 120, at 12:40 p.m. and traveling through downtown McHenry.
